The chain is the most common of all crochet stitches and in fact will normally form the first row of any project that you undertake

Step 1

Almost all crochet projects will start out this way. First wrap your yarn or cotton over your finger. Now form a loop and pull through. This is similar to starting to tie a shoelace. This is known as a slip knot

Step 2

Now that you have a slip knot you can need to put your crochet hook into the loop as shown. You are now ready to start your first chain.

Step 3

It is important to hold the crochet hook and yarn correctly. Note the position of the hands, yarn and crochet hook in the picture.

Step 4

Put the crochet hook underneath the yarn and then hook the yarn by bringing the crochet hook over the top of the yarn. Now that you have hooked the yarn we are ready to complete the chain.

Step 5

Now that you have the yarn hooked onto the crochet hook all you need to do to complete the chain is to pull the hook through the loop from step 2. You have now completed your first chain.

To do more chains simply requires the repeating of steps 4 and 5. Remember go unser the yarn and then over the top of it hooking the yarn with the crochet hook and then simply pull it through the loop of the newly created chain.
