Free Crochet Pattern for Granny Square
By
Crochet granny squares have been making a come back for the past couple of years. Crochet a traditional square, it is easy!! You need to use just basic crochet stitches - ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch) & dc (double crochet).
Start with 6 chain and sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. 3 ch (for 1st dc) 2dc 3ch into the center of the ring.*3dc 3ch into ring repeat twice and you will have 4 groups of 3dc, sl st into the top of the third ch of 1st stitch. You have a square, work 2 groups of 3dc, 3ch 3dc forming the corners of the next row and 1ch between the groups for the sides. Crochet the square as small or as big, with or without colour changes as required.
Crochet granny square has evolved into exciting combinations of crochet stitches and shapes. Traditional granny square is a simple version. Octagonal is a nice shape and starts with 6 groups instead of 4 in the first row. The vibrant colour combinations are numerous and eye catching or you can crochet a square in different shades of one colour. Try a sample using ( popcorn st 3 ch) popcorn stitch in each corner instead of the groups of dc (double crochet).
